Asad Umer says, New COVID Variant Omicron Extremely Dangerous

Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar said Monday that the new variant of Coronavirus is extremely dangerous, and the next two to three weeks will be extremely crucial for this situation.

While addressing a press conference with SAPM Faisal Sultan, NCOC head Asad Umar stated that the new variant is spreading around the world but that the vaccine offers the only protection against it.

Further, Asad Umar said that the government has taken steps to control the spread of the variant all over the country. While announcing a massive vaccination campaign coming up in two to three days, he asked people to get vaccinated against the virus.

Faisal Sultan noted the omicron variant is spreading faster when compared to other variants. Unvaccinated individuals are being affected all over the globe, he pointed out. He noted that millions of people have been vaccinated, but they are still at risk.

As a result, an entirely new variant of Covid-19 spread across borders and renewed curbs on Sunday. Dubbed Omicron, the strain was first discovered in southern Africa, representing a fresh challenge to global efforts to combat the pandemic.

“We are in a race against time,” EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said. Vaccine manufacturers needed between two and three weeks “to assess the quality of mutations”, she added.

Pakistan, Qatar, the United States, Britain, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Netherlands are among the countries that have already imposed travel restrictions on southern Africa. Angola became the first country in the region to suspend all flights.
