Arooj Aftab, a Brooklyn-based Pakistani artist, won her first Grammy, becoming the first Pakistani to do so, for her song “Mohabbat,” which was nominated in the Best Global Performance category. Arooj Aftab has been a resident of New York for over a decade, and her music, which blends ancient Sufi traditions with folk, jazz, and minimalism, has brought her worldwide fame.
The musician claimed that she was “beyond thrilled” when she found out that she won a Grammy award. Arooj Aftab was also nominated for another category: Best New Artist. However, that award was eventually won by Olivia Rodrigo.
The Pakistani artist made waves across her nation with her appearance in Coke Studio’s 14th season. She featured on the track ‘Mehram’ alongside Asfar Hussain. The lead vocalist of Bayaan paid tribute to Arooj Aftab on his Instagram story, his caption read, “WOW! This is absolutely amazing! You’re such an inspiration, Congratulations for the grammy Arooj Aftab. Super proud of you.”
