Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister, claimed on Monday that Imran Khan intends to start a “civil war” in the country, a day after Khan’s supporters called for a peaceful march to Islamabad on May 25 to demand the dissolution of the National Assembly and new elections.
Last month, the Opposition parties used a no-confidence motion in parliament to remove Khan, a former cricketer turned politician.
Imran Niazi wishes to start a civil war in Pakistan. He is, however, mistaken. Prime Minister Shehbaz declared in a press conference on Monday that the public will never forgive him [for the sin] and will grasp him by the collar.
When asked if the government would send in the army to stop Khan’s march, Shehbaz stated that a decision will be made if and when it was needed.
Khan stated the march would turn into a sit-in and continue until his demands were met at a press conference after his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party’s central committee meeting in Peshawar on Sunday.
During the news conference, he stated that the major demands for the march to the capital were the immediate dissolution of the National Assembly and a timetable for the next general election.
Khan said he wanted people from all areas of life to join the march to protest his ouster as prime minister, which he described as unconstitutional.
“In its tenure of nearly 4 years, the PTI govt took loans worth Rs 20,000 billion, which was an increase of 80% in the loans taken since 1947. Do they have any single project to show for these loans? People want answers,” the Prime Minister said in a tweet targeting Khan.
Khan had gone on a whirlwind tour of key towns and addressed large crowds after his removal to sell his theory of removal, allegedly convincing his supporters that he was a victim who should be restored to power with a clear mandate to manage the country and solve its issues.
